Installing a complete and permanent basement waterproofing system includes the installation of a few pieces of third-party components. Having installed more than 20,000 systems in the New Jersey, New York area, we believe we have identified the manufacturers that will deliver the best quality pumps, dehumidifiers and battery backup systems for our customer's buck. A standard French drain and sump pump system is great for preventing basement flooding during periods rain. However, the system depends on electricity to power the sump pump that expels water from the system.
Water always flows downhill, and by the easiest route possible. That's the basic concept behind a French drain; a slightly sloped trench filled with gravel and perforated pipe that's used to divert underground water and relieve hydrostatic pressure, extremely prevalent in the New York, New Jersey area, to prevent flooding in your basement. To accomplish this, we begin by opening a 12" - 14" trench in the basement floor (Fig. 1). Typically the trench will be along the perimeter of the basement. However, the length and location of the trench varies depending on the unique circumstances on site.
The New Jersey, New York area has a notoriously high water table. Though it may not be immediately apparent to homeowners, ground water is constantly shifting below their foundation. When there is significant rain the water table rises and exerts pressure on your foundation. This pressure - known as hydrostatic pressure - will force water to seep into your basement via any seams, cracks, crevices, or pores. Basement waterproofing is the only way to permanently relieve hydrostatic pressure and stop basement flooding due to ground water.
