Modern Duelists Fencing Academy

A Modern Olympic sport since 1896 (The first Summer Olympic Games), fencing is based on the centuries-old art of European sword dueling. Modern Duelists Fencing Academy started in June 2013 due to popular demand for the sport of fencing in the Cecil County, MD and Newark, DE area. We have since expanded to become one of the largest and most competitive epee (one of the three fencing weapons/swords) programs in the state, with students from five counties across three states and competitive divisions.

Fencing-a Summer Olympic Sport-is the only sport to be featured in every Modern Olympic Games. The sport itself is based on European sword dueling and the many of the blade techniques we use today are the same tried-and-true techniques from centuries ago. Modern Fencing, however, has fast-paced rules and makes use of electronic scoring devices to determine when a fencer has been hit. In fencing there are three weapons: the foil, saber, and epee (pronounced ep-ay). Here at Modern Duelists Fencing Academy, our sole focus is on Epee Fencing.

Here at Modern Duelists Fencing Academy, most of our fencers like to make their first gear purchases through Absolute Fencing Gear. They have very competitive prices, and we have found they have great customer service and ship to Maryland and Delaware very quickly, even with standard UPS shipping. The recommended equipment on this page is from Absolute Fencing, but students are welcome to buy equipment from any reputable vendor. The recommended jackets are very good for the price. We recommend the front-zip jackets because they are easy to put on and take off without help.

Modern Duelists Fencing Academy is a SafeSport compliant organization and adheres to the policies set forth by the United States Olympic Committee and USA Fencing. Here at Modern Duelists Fencing Academy, we expect our fencers to behave in a way that embodies good sportsmanship, teamwork, and acceptance. Behavior that is found to be dangerous, disruptive, lacking sportsmanship, or otherwise detrimental to the club or its fencers may result in the offending fencer being asked to leave or denied business indefinitely.
