Pruning helps to maintain size, improve structural strength, maintain health, and increase the overall value of your landscape. Proper pruning also encourages fuller growth and blooms. Shrubs that are not flowering well, may also be pruned to remove old wood in favor of younger growth. For newer trees, prune as little as possible for the first 2-3 years except for dead, diseased and dying wood. After 3 years, remove any suckers from the base. Lower branches can also be removed for clearance. Not all mature trees need pruning, therefore it is advisable to seek a qualified individual who is a member of an organization such as the International Society of Arboriculture when such work is required.
Mulching is one of the most beneficial things a home owner can do for the health of a tree or a plant. Mulch can reduce water loss from the soil, minimize weeds, and improve soil structure. Properly applied, mulch can give landscapes a handsome, well-groomed appearance. Mulch must be applied properly; if it is too deep, or if the wrong material is used, it can cause harm to trees and other landscape plants. Apply about 1" of shredded bark mulch around top the of plants and about 2-3" of shredded bark mulch to the rest of your beds.
One of the best garden centers I have ever visited - and I taught horticulture for 30 years so I have been to a few garden centers across the country. Great displays, knowledgeable staff, great quality of stock, all well maintained.
