Bali Home Furnishings was started in 2000 by Norm Keller, who retired in 2014. Bali Home Furnishings LLC then took over the business and is managed by Martin Mote, who is also the importer. We import sustainable wood furniture and sculpture from the islands of Bali and Java in Indonesia, and Asian garden pots from Vietnam and China. All of our teak, mahogany, and suar wood furniture are from sustainable sources, and no rainforest degradation occurs in their procurement. Reclaimed teak is that which is salvaged from old buildings - primarily in Java - and much of it is several hundred years old.
Teak furniture will weather to a handsome silver patina over time. This can take several months or some years, depending on the amount of exposure to ultraviolet rays and rainfall. As it weathers, there will be a slight lifting of the grain and there may even be a few small cracks. These are not a defect, just a natural occurrence due to expansion and contraction of the wood. After weathering it will return to the smooth finish at which it began. For those who wish to prevent silvering, Bali Home Furnishings offers a number of high quality products specifically designed for teak furniture care.
Indonesians appreciate the economic value of Tectonis Grandis, their native variety of Teak. Tectonis Grandis is considered the finest of the 29 sub-species of Teak. Its natural oil, rubber content, and extraordinary density provide natural protection for the tree - and by extension, for any item made from the tree. For these reasons it is used in ocean-going vessels, and has traditionally been the primary building material in Indonesia. Now that Indonesia has the fourth largest population in the world, Indonesian furniture makers and their government play an active role in protecting this precious resource.
Traditional homes of Java were famous for their distinctive design, as well as the care with which they were made. Built prior to the Dutch Colonial Period, these homes emphasized solid Teak construction and specific design features. One feature consisted of intricate carvings all around the house, primarily above the main entryway. Several hundred years old now, these iconic structures are disappearing into history as they are torn down. The carvings you see in many pieces of our furniture are the actual carvings reclaimed from these historic homes, and preserved by incorporating them into furniture that is sought by designers and collectors the world over.
Q: Why is Bali Home Furnishings so different from other furniture stores? A: Most retail furniture stores simply carry sample sets of factory-made furniture and no inventory per se. When people buy from them, an order is written and the product is shipped within a few weeks from the wholesaler's warehouse. Most of the furniture is made of particle board and very thin veneer, and can be quite attractive. At BHF, however, particle board is not allowed in our warehouse. Further, we actually buy all of our inventory directly from the artisans who make it, and ship it to our warehouse, which takes two to five months.
We are currently liquidating all remaining garden pots at 50% off our already lowest prices. Made in Vietnam, these pots are the longest lasting ceramic pots. Our regular prices are wholesale to the public, and now you can get them for half of that. Regular prices run from $19 to $399, depending on...
