The mission of the Hingham Municipal Lighting Plant is to work diligently to provide the residents of Hingham with low cost, safe, reliable electric service on demand at a competitive price. The mission of the Administration is to provide policy direction and departmental management and to support the activities of the operating divisions within HMLP. The mission of the Engineering Division is to provide the Operating Division with electrical system design, Computer Aided Design and Drafting Service (CADD) and technical engineering support in their mission to operate, maintain and deliver their services to the HMLP customers, as well as to formulate short and long term planning for the Hingham Municipal Lighting Plant infrastructure.
The Hingham Municipal Lighting Plant provides electricity to approximately 10,000 customers in the town of Hingham. HMLP is a member of New England Power Pool (NEPOOL) and ISO-NE (Independent System Operator - New England), so it can provide power more reliably since it is connected to the power grid and not buying power from a single supplier. The customer load in Hingham is supplied by entering into long-term and short-term contracts for capacity and energy. These contracts include generators from some companies and system power from others.
Hingham Municipal Lighting Plant is one of over 2,000 public power systems in the country, offering important benefits not enjoyed by customers of private, investor-owned utilities. HMLP coordinates the buying and selling of power when it is economically advantageous to the Hingham customers.
