The orchard sits on two sites in the middle of what once was a typical Norwegian-American dairy farm dating back to the early 1800's. The farmhouse, dating to 1860, still remains and has sheltered our family since the orchard opened its doors in 1984. What isn't composed of orchard is wetland, prairie, rolling fields, and woodlands. In addition to wonderful fall fruit and cider, we provide our customers with a quiet place to enjoy nature, a harvest experience, and an escape from the pressure of fast-paced urban life.
First to bloom at the orchard: Witch Hazel. #springiscoming
Despite the cold today, @southpawfruitf arm and I continued our tradition of pruning the Almata tree as close to Valentine’s Day as possible. Almata are an intensely red-fleshed apple—even their wood has a rosy hue. Hope everyone is staying warm out there.
We love our work almost always but especially on days like today: blue skies, puffy clouds, snow on the ground, and lots of sun—a February pruning dream! Another snowstorm is on the way tomorrow. Not sad about having more insulation for the trees to get them through the upcoming subzero temps.
The dark day that was January 6th also marked “Twelfth Night”, the day we traditionally wassail the orchard. And so our little orchard family pod toasted, sang, and left offerings to the trees as usual, despite the chaos. Still hoping for a better world and a great crop in 2021.
Happy Solstice! #returnoftheligh t
