As a general contractor in Madison, Wisconsin, National Construction's goal is to partner with local business owners to drive economic growth. The name National Construction describes the community focus of our building experience, and our vision to partner with business owners and architects across the nation. We're passionate about hometown life in Wisconsin and beyond. We're loyal to the community ideal, and we're devoted to keeping the communities we work in strong. Our portfolio of work includes commercial remodeling, commercial renovation and new construction for the businesses and services most important to a city's residents, like childcare, healthcare and government facilities, and housing, retail and hospitality.
National Construction has an old-school work ethic, strong safety orientation, excellent attention to detail, strong organizational skills and a commitment to follow through. They emphasize getting the job done right. National Construction did a phenomenal job of delivering the project on time and within budget. Their unmatched level of expertise and communication made the entire process run smoothly and efficiently. This independently owned and operated furniture store needed extensive exterior and interior renovation.
We believe the best outcomes are achieved when all those involved in a commercial construction project collaborate on - or even before - day one. That said, we are committed to providing personalized service at any point in the process, scaled to your needs. National Construction maintains an ideal balance of low overhead and high capacity, so you can be sure your funds will be applied efficiently for the best result. We offer several building design and construction options, whether your project is a small remodel or a multi-million dollar community improvement initiative.
From small repairs to multi-phase, multi-million dollar renovations and new commercial construction, National Construction's projects managers and crew are committed to delivering quality work, on your timeline and within your budget. Our laborers, carpenters, superintendents and project managers are loyal to National Construction and most importantly, our clients. They are trained to detect, and empowered to correct, anything unsatisfactory. In addition, our vast experience with most subcontractors in southern Wisconsin over our nearly 30 years in business allows us to include past performance in our evaluation process.
Preconstruction is the most important stage in the commercial building process. It's also an area where National Construction stands out. While it's most relevant to our design-build and team approaches to the building design and construction process, it's part of all of our projects in some way. In short, National Construction evaluates costs, quality and schedules during preconstruction. We can also provide unique support in this stage, like assistance with a capital needs assessment, brokerage service negotiation, land acquisition, permitting and zoning.

Our company was founded in 1990 as Target Development, a name inspired by a target masonry saw. But then the red bullseye infiltrated the Madison metro, and things got a little confusing. So we changed our name to National Construction, and continued our work in commercial remodeling. Around 2000, founder Neil Johnson decided to partner with Jeff Grundahl and his firm JG Development on some larger projects. The partnership was destined - Jeff had worked for Neil at another company he'd owned before Target Development and JG Development existed.
National Construction advocates for contractor-architect collaboration early on, knowing it will lead to the most efficient use of your funds. This process begins with the end in mind when you, the owner, choose one firm for both design and construction services; we, as general contractor, subcontract the architect. Here, the construction contract is negotiated as together we define plans and specifications that meet your needs and budget. An alternative to design-build is the team approach, where you, the owner, negotiate separate contracts with National Construction and the architecture firm of your choice, and we work as a team to design and budget the project.
