Gardner Architects LLC is a residential architecture practice, focusing on sustainable, artfully crafted buildings and places. Developed over three decades of professional practice involving projects from large scale commercial and institutional buildings to vacation homes to private homes in Washington DC and the surrounding region, our work is site-specific, detail-oriented, and client-centric. My husband and I have renovated several homes and have worked with a number of architects. Once we worked with Amy Gardner, we have never looked elsewhere. We completed two substantial projects with her, one in 2009/2010 and one in 2015. We recommend her very highly, for a variety of reasons. First, Amy is an excellent architect. Her design skills are superlative. Yet, she has always been very sensitive to our desires and preferences, consistently incorporating these into her own elegant and distinctive designs.
Our Academic Leadership informs our practice. Matters of sustainability and building craft that guide our approach to architecture find expression in our teaching. Amy Gardner has been a faculty member at the University of Maryland School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation since 1989. She was the lead faculty adviser to the University of Maryland's LEAFHouse 2nd place entry to the 2007 Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. She repeated this leadership role for WaterShed, UMD's winning 2011 Solar Decathlon entry, working closely with a faculty team including Brittany Williams, a Gardner Architects LLC project architect and also a lecturer at UMD. Amy's work on the Solar Decathlon grew out of her efforts to build an integrated design curriculum.
The focus of our practice is residential architecture. Whether a project involves a renovation, an addition to an existing building or new construction, we offer full architectural services at a highly personalized level. Our clients are central to the design process and we keep them continuously involved. Our approach is to foster a team approach in which all team members including us - from energy modelers to engineers, contractors to owners - are encouraged to be involved from the very beginning in order to make critical decisions about the materials, systems, and building technologies that form the basis for the design.
