Need your driveway paved? The first recorded use of asphalt as a road building material was in Babylon around 625 B.C., in the reign of King Naboppolassar. The word asphalt comes from the Greek "asphaltos", meaning "secure." The Romans changed the word to "asphaltus, " and used the substance to seal their baths, reservoirs, canals, pipelines and tunnels. Many centuries later, Europeans used asphalt for re-caulking ships. Later, asphalt roads were used for good drainage, requiring a foundation of large stones covered with excavated road material to raise the roadbed, followed by a layer of gravel.
Is an Asphalt Driveway the right choice? Whether you call them asphalt driveways, black top driveways, tar driveways or paved driveways. Asphalt driveways are more common in the Northern states to withstand the frost, freezing and thawing verses Southern states that use concrete and concrete pavers because they don't have to worry about the frost, corrosive salts and general winter weather damage. Asphalt responds better to freeze and thaw whereas concrete would crack. The black color of asphalt also heats up faster, melting snow and ice on the driveway and roads faster than concrete.
