Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority

LCSWMA manages the trash and recyclable materials from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania homes and businesses, as well as trash from the City of Harrisburg and surrounding Dauphin County communities. Once the waste is delivered by private haulers, LCSWMA employs a multi-step approach to disposal and processing, called an Integrated System. This Integrated System not only saves significant landfill capacity, it also creates clean, renewable energy.

Most people don't think about trash after it's left the curb. Those who do wonder about where their trash goes, assume it heads directly to a landfill where it is buried and forgotten. But LCSWMA understands that solid waste management decisions have a lasting impact on the environment for many generations. That's why we work hard to transform waste into a resource to make great things happen in our community. The first word of LCSWMA's tagline (RETHINK) conveys our commitment to discovering and implementing new ways of using waste as a resource to create a sustainable future.

We must RETHINK the way trash is managed. LCSWMA views waste as resource for sustainable, green power. In fact, every day, we transform trash into renewable energy (electricity) that powers tens of thousands of homes and businesses. And we also seek to use waste in new and creative ways to help our community be more sustainable. LCSWMA owns the Lancaster Waste-to-Energy (WTE) Facility in Bainbridge and the Susquehanna Resource Management Complex (SRMC) in Harrisburg. LCSWMA contracts with Covanta Energy to operate both facilities.
