I grew up in Vermont on a small farm with parents who embraced the back-to-the-land movement.
I had 60 chickens, raised sheep and tapped sugar maples.
It was a time when hippies were moving to the state with great expectations and a plethora of creative ideas.
In the 1970's Vermont was alive experimenting with alternative building methods and home energy ideas.
My dad was an architect and I was awed as a kid by his beautiful pen and ink renderings and amazing balsa wood models.
We spent many hours fixing up our old farm house and working on the various outbuildings around the farm.

We've been a leader in the design of beautiful Pacific Northwest homes and communities since 1990.
Bringing passion and skill to each project, we provide innovative and site responsive solutions that meet client needs and desires while respecting budget parameters.
BC&J architects follow a simple design philosophy to ensure that building occurs properly the first time: Listen with intention to the client and design for the climate and conditions of the Pacific Northwest.
Taking advantage of the beauty of the surrounding environment is a hallmark of the designs by Davis Studio Architecture + Design, the husband and wife design team of architect Jonathan Davis and designer Mary Jo Davis.
Bringing an appreciation of, and care for, the environment is a key goal of pieceHomes.
Their combination live + work residence in the Venice area of Los Angeles was designed in part as a showcase of green technologies and materials and as the pieceHomes prototype, showing clients that green, modern, and affordable can go together.

I grew up in Seattle, WA and went to the University of Washington, receiving my BA in Environmental Design in 1981.
I graduated with my Master's Degree in Architecture from University of Oregon in 1986.
That same year, my wife, Lizann Hupp, and I moved to Bainbridge Island, Washington and we live in the second house we've built for ourselves, with our incredible daughters Hanna and Kyla.
I founded Patina Design Architects in 1992, the year I became a Registered Architect in the State of Washington, and have enjoyed having my own small firm since then - 21 years!
