It was formed by a special referendum with the sole purpose to improve the quality of life on beautiful Amelia Island, Florida, through the control of pestiferous and disease bearing mosquitoes. These services are provided through a local ad valorem tax and therefore available at no extra charge to the residents of the district. Amelia Island Mosquito Control District is governed by a three member Board of Commissioner team that is elected from within the District. They meet every 3rd Wednesday of each month in the James "Check" Taylor Operation Center (2500 Lynndale Road, Fernandina Beach, Florida) at 5:30 PM.
AIMCD exists to provide a more enjoyable and comfortable living environement through the environmentally responsible and rapid control of mosquitoes in our community. We provide excellent customer service and public relations through transparency and community responsibility. In the early days, the District provided mosquito control in the form of expanding old drainage ditches and excavating new ones where appropriate. This would allow mosquito fish (gambusia affinis) to prey on mosquito larva as well as allowing District personnel access to these areas.
