Our website is the "Go To" source for making a sound, educated decision in choosing a roofing contractor for your residential exterior project.

When most people refer to their roofing system they simply use the term "shingles" to describe the barrier that keeps their home dry. Although shingles are an essential component, the common roofing system is actually made up of components that work together to keep your home dry and safe from the elements of nature. That is why most roofing contractors will often use the term "roofing system" when discussing any type of roof.

Like the structural elements of the roofing system, the roof barrier is comprised of many various components that work together to keep your home or business protected from rain, snow and ice. Without the proper barriers in place, your roof will leak and ultimately cause structural damage to the roofing system, insulation, and drywall or plaster ceilings and/or walls. As can easily be expected, one small leak may result in substantial repair costs, so following the manufacturer recommendations for the proper roof barrier is essential.

Some experts will tell you that the type of roofing material that must be used depends upon whether a building is zoned residential or commercial, but this is not always true. Although typically commercial buildings will use rubber roofing and residential buildings will use asphalt shingles, there are many cases in which commercial buildings have asphalt shingles, and residential homes have rubber roofing. Again, style and pitch of the roof, aesthetics, and the overall cost all play a significant role as to the type of roofing material that is used on a given application.

Roof felt, otherwise known tar paper, is a heavy grade paper that is made from tar-impregnating paper, thereby producing a waterproof material that is used as a moisture barrier in roofing. Roof felt lies between the roof decking and the roof barrier and is implemented as an added layer of protection from rain, ice, and snow. Typically sold in 36 wide rolls, roof felt is essentially an underlayment to the barrier protection of your roofing system. Roof felt protects the roof and provides a barrier between the roof decking and the final roofing material.

The structural components of the roofing system consist of many internal and external elements that often times play little or no role whatsoever as it relates to the integrity of diverting water away from the structure of a house or building. Although each and every part of the roof is important and serves a valuable purpose, the following information is limited to the rafters, roof deck, and soffit. Luckily, it is very rare that problems arise with the roof rafters. However, I would strongly recommend that when the time comes that you need your roof replaced or repaired; it is sound practice to have the roofing contractor inspect all of the roof rafters to be certain that none of them are rotten or otherwise failing.
