Price quotes on area rugs vary and are often on the high side because many companies only take them out for cleaning. This applies to Oriental rugs, custom rugs and even machine woven synthetic rugs. Some companies are merely middlemen or brokers who mark up the price but don't perform the cleaning themselves. Other companies duplicate onsite cleaning and charge a large premium. There are several acceptable methods for professionally cleaning wall to wall carpets. Steam cleaning, also called hot water extraction, is by far the most common. Dry cleaning, encapsulation, bonnet cleaning, and shampooing are other examples. Most carpet manufacturers recommend steam cleaning because it is more thorough and superior at removing embedded soil, environmental contaminants, oiled based stains, blood stains, vomit stains and many others. We generally use steam cleaning. Although we follow the industry recommendation of cleaning carpets annually, each household is different.
