My business, Namaste House Assisted Living, sat on a parking lot with a gravel drive before San Juan Nurseries Landscape Designer, Eva Montane, came on board.

Although most of us enjoy our outdoors spaces during the summer, it can get unbearably hot sometimes. In these cases, many people are adding types of shelter like umbrellas, pergolas, and even trees to protect themselves and their furniture from the sun and heat. These structures also are a great medium for showcasing climbing plants like clematis, morning glory, or Boston ivy. Pergolas can do much more than bring all your outdoor elements together; they bring families and friends together.

The fireplace is more commonly built in conjunction with a patio cover or pergola to help create the full-service living room outside. The fire pits are a great addition to an open air seating area in a backyard. The ambiance of a lit fire as you cook and entertain can set the mood whether you are trying to entertain or just relax.

If space allows, why not consider adding a larger water feature to your landscape. Add twists and turns of natural-looking streams and waterfalls ending up in a breathtaking pond near your patio. Unfortunately, fish are often seen as creating a maintenance nightmare. Contrary to popular belief, fish will actually reduce pond maintenance, as they graze on string algae and bottom feed from the pond floor. Not to mention fish are pets too! Our kids are not the only ones who have named our pond fish!

As homes have become more insulated and energy efficient, indoor air pollution has become a serious concern. Glues and adhesives, carpets, household cleaners, foam insulation materials, paints, pressed wood products, inks from print and more have been proven to emit toxic chemical compounds. Benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene and acetone are just some of the chemicals emitted from common household items and can pollute your home without any visual warning. These compounds when breathed on a daily basis can result in eye/nose/throat irritation, allergies, asthma and headaches/dizziness.

Families can enjoy the sight and sound of running water without the maintenance of a pond. Container water gardens can create settings on a deck or patio, but they also look great greeting visitors by the front door. Any container will do as long as it has the ability to hold water. Any un-glazed pottery will need to be sealed and drain holes will need to be plugged. A wooden container such as a whiskey barrel can be lined with a piece of rubber liner that is affixed to the rim. Make sure the sealant you use safe for plants and fish if you choose to add them.
