Water features can be a flowing way to add excitement or tranquility to your landscape. Though there is some regular maintenance required, if done right, the emotions that they provide are worth it. We can do something as simple as creatively placing a statuary fountain, to building a complex pond and fall system complete with filters and skimmers. The latter of the two requires a more comprehensive design process which usually takes place on site. This allows our designers to factor in the existing natural surroundings, scale, and other dynamics that will help make the feature look as if nature created it on its own.
At HLC all programs start with a soil test. We are looking to measure the chemical and physical characteristics of the soil. We are interested in the ph levels, and the amount of organic matter present in the soil. An acidic soil inhibits nitrogen uptake by the grass plants. The soil test determines limestone requirements to maximize fertilizer efficiency. The soil test also provides us with the soils cation exchange capacity or CEC. The CEC is the soils ability to hold nutrients. The CEC and organic matter levels guide us in determining the soils health and shows areas to target for improvement.
We define hardscapes, or the "backbone" of the landscape, as anything that is not living. For example: retaining walls, driveways, patios, stone outcroppings, paving surfaces, and structures. By using aesthetic and functional guidelines, these elements define spaces and set the parameters for the plants, mulch, and finish details to follow. If done correctly, everything that follows in the installation process will be that much improved with a good hardscape design. When selecting and laying out the hardscape elements, our designers take into consideration elements such as traffic flow, texture, color, form, and more.
