Few people realize the energy required for hot water is about 40% of the average family's energy consumption. With the amount of water heating needed for laundry, dishes, and showers, installing a solar water heating system can eliminate water heating costs for your home. There are two major components to a solar hot water system. The first is the solar collector. The collector is usually installed on a roof facing the sun. Running through the collectors are copper tubing, filled with water that during the day absorb energy from the sun.
Drainpipe Plumbing recently performed maintenance on our 10-yr-old solar hot water heater, which reminded me of what an amazing company they still are. Finding quality professionals for the sub-contractor components of our "owner builder" home (2008) was sometimes hit and miss, but with Drainpipe, we really hit the mark. Our original install included whole-house copper plumbing with tie-ins to the jet pump from our catchment system, laundry room, kitchen, hose bibs (six), four bathrooms (incl. the garage), outdoor shower, and our solar hot water system. This sizeable installation has been infallible for the last 10 years.
