3 Avoid planting trees near sewer lines. Tree roots have an affinity to water and will seek moisture from the closest available source. Tree roots can cause cracks in pipes and infiltrate causing major blockages. If you have a clogged drain, the first thing you need to do is figure out where the clog is. If only one sink, shower, bath, or toilet in the house is backing up then you know that the clog is probably confined to the trap of that fixture. If more than one fixture is clogged, then the blockage is probably in the main drain line.
In recent years, community water suppliers began installing check valves on water lines going into each home and business. The check valve is a one way valve to allow water to enter your home, but not allow possibly contaminated water to flow back into the water main. When water is heated (such as in your home's water heater), it expands. This phenomenon is known as thermal expansion. Because the expanded water is not allowed to flow back into the main, it will build up excessive pressure in your home's water distribution system.
Cold weather is here. Be sure to disconnect hoses from the outside faucets. Leaving hoses connected will not allow the water to drain out and can cause freeze damage.
Laundry drain tip: If you have trouble with your laundry drain clogging trying switching to liquid detergent. The powder doesn't always dissolve completely then coats the drain pipe causing a restriction then back-up.
