The Morgan Driveway was designed in the throes of The Great Recession circa 2010. After a driveway design was created by Tom Ralston Concrete the Morgan's had some setbacks and had to postpone the project. The design was after simple elegance, perhaps as they say "Understated Elegance". We welcomed them back with open arms and both parties could not be any happier with the results of this beautiful new driveway. I said, "there is only one stipulation for this new concrete art piece of yours, you can never drive on it and it will be for show only."
The Saratoga Creek House is a David Stark Wilson and Associates design for a very unique site. They did a masterful job with project coordination. TRC finds the best projects revolve around the best team, from Architects, Engineers, GC's & Subs. The interior floors were a perfect backdrop for the amazing features that Wilson and his client brought to the fore. Bronze, Dark Hardwoods, elegant curvatures and interesting, eye catching dropped ceilings. TRC was one of the chosen high quality craftsman to help develop the vision into a beautiful reality.
This project was challenging because of the tall back splashes and the many outlets in the wall as well as working around cut outs for the wooden chopping blocks. TRC had never done such a small sink surround and had to pay close attention to the mix design, special admixtures and simply pouring the concrete very stiff. TRC finishers made many passes using a hard trowel finish and the results provided wonderfully burnished and organic looking countertops. The Peck Donnely couple were thrilled with their new countertops.
The homeowner was a science teacher and loved reptiles, namely snakes. They wanted to know how we could incorporate "cool snakes" and this is what we came up with from "soup to nuts." We had to house the electrical work in the inner walls so that the electrical work for the lights could function, had to curve the snakes to the radius of the fire pit etc. The Germany Fire Pit is located in Scotts Valley and was designed by Tom Ralston Concrete as per the requests of Sheryl Germany. The fire pit is nestled perfectly into a round concrete seating area that features a rich grey color and a sand finish texture.
I worked with Tom Ralston for about 8 years. You won't find a nicer more honest guy. He runs a great company!
This week I was in Del Mar to attend a Decorative Surface Solution Group meeting and workshop. We learned a lot about each other, about best practices from some of the best in the business...abou t the industry from many sides of the fence i.e. suppliers, contractors, commercial work and residential work. One of the group's founders, Mike Price, asked after the event if I could write a song about concrete cracks...a song didn't come to me but around midnight an almost haiku poem about it...
There were 7-redwood trees planted around the memorials and there were 7-of us were asked to participate in the ceremony and set our small abalone shells around a fire. As I understand it the number 7 signifies North, South, East, West, Above, Below and Here in the Middle the place of the Sacred...
It was a great honor for TRC to help design and build these memorials for over 2,000 Native Americans who were exhumed and dumped into a mass gravesite across the town of Santa Cruz. Chief Valentin Lopez of the Amah Mutsun tribe shared his message of sadness but also of healing and responsibility ....
