Founded in 1995 by William A. (Bill) Grant and members who attended the first two organizational meetings he convened, the society quickly grew and now includes representatives from several states and continents. We are an interdisciplinary group: Our membership is made up of landscape architects, scholars, garden directors, designers, historians, preservationists, writers, librarians, educators, government professionals, and of course passionate gardeners and plant lovers. Our activities are focused on promoting wider knowledge, preservation, and restoration of California's historic gardens and landscapes.
In 2009, the City of Watsonville established an Historic Label Art Mural Project to encourage artists to paint fifteen large murals of early-1900s era apple crate labels on the walls of businesses throughout downtown.
