IKECA was founded in 1989 when a small group of exhaust kitchen exhaust cleaning specialists were attending the same meeting. They found that they all had similar needs and beliefs in the importance of proper and complete exhaust cleaning to the fire protection world. Within two years, these founders had created the first trade association for the kitchen exhaust cleaning industry.

The International Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning Association is committed to serve and represent the interests of the commercial kitchen exhaust cleaning industry by promoting the highest cleaning and ethical standards; providing education and certification opportunities; creating a broader awareness of the need for continually improving fire prevention by cooperating with and involving fire departments and the insurance industry and influencing in a positive manner regulations and governmental actions affecting the industry; advancing the safety, image, efficiency, competitiveness and profitability of industry members; and working to create healthier, cleaner and safer environments in which to operate a kitchen.

In August of 2007, a fire in West Roxbury took the lives of two Boston City Firefighters. The fire ignited in the kitchen and spread into the kitchen exhaust system, where it burned in the duct work for over an hour. The resulting investigation revealed serious deficiencies in the kitchen exhaust system, and a failure to properly clean and maintain the system.
