Living in Memphis and surrounding areas, we're always surrounded by squirrels, raccoons, rats, birds, and other animals — but few of us want to share our living space with them. Unfortunately, if there are any ways for animals to access your warm, cozy home, they'll find a way in. Removing them humanely and permanently can be a complicated process, but at Coopertown, we know what works! Coopertown began removing raccoons and squirrels from homes in 1978, and today, we're the longest-running animal control company in Memphis.
Just as a masonry fireplace becomes a beautiful, eye-grabbing focal point in a room, a masonry chimney can be an attractive focal point of your home's exterior, bringing it a timeless charm. Looks, of course, are just part of the equation. A chimney's role in your home is an important one, so proper build should be considered as much as or more than visual appearance. When you use a fireplace or stove, the chimney works to protect the house from high heat transfer (to combustible building materials), and protects the people in your home from toxic gases and other harmful byproducts of combustion.
When left without regular maintenance, fireplaces and chimneys are the perfect breeding grounds for toxic mold. Left unchecked, mold in the chimney can cause seriously unpleasant odors - and have a significant negative impact on the air quality in a home. The following guide can help homeowners understand what causes mold growth in chimneys, the signs mold is present in a chimney system, and how to prevent it from occurring. There are three main factors that cause mold growth in fireplaces and chimneys: poor ventilation, lack of natural light, and naturally cool temperatures.
The CSIA Master Chimney Sweep certification is a very prestigious achievement, designated only to those that have gone above and beyond in the chimney sweeping industry. It requires years of continuing education and the accumulation and maintenance of several other certifications. There are currently only 34 Master Chimney Sweeps in America, so we are very proud to have two of them on our team. Ken Robinson Sr. and Kenny Robinson Jr. are the only father and son Master Chimney Sweeps and Coopertown Services is the only company in America to have multiple staff members with the certification.
At Coopertown Services, we are known for caring for the chimneys are fireplaces of our customers. But did you know we are also nationally certified wildlife removal experts? Spring in middle Tennessee is a time of growth. As grass grows green again, trees bud, and flowers bloom, there is also an influx of baby animals. Unfortunately, many animal mothers try to make their nests in roofs, attics, and chimneys. This can cause damage to your home - as well as creating a serious safety hazard. Middle Tennessee is home to a host of wildlife!
It's incredibly important to keep up with the regular maintenance and repair requirements of your fireplace and chimney system. But that's not the only heating system in your home that needs regular attention. Your gas furnace and water heater are venting through a hard-working chimney, too, and just like your fireplace and chimney, a damaged or improperly functioning gas furnace or water heater and chimney can lead to an unsafe home. The byproducts coming from your gas appliance are different from those coming from your fireplace (you won't see dark soot, for instance).
We all spend our adult lives trying to find contractors we can trust to do right by us and our homes. And it certainly isn't easy to find someone offering honest assessments and providing top-notch work at a fair and honest price. But at Coopertown Services, we aim to be the trusted pros you turn to whenever you have chimney needs, from regular maintenance to chimney performance problems and installing new systems. We've grown into the largest chimney sweep company in Shelby County (we're also its oldest, having launched in 1977), and we built our reputation on providing the kind of service that turns first-time clients into loyal customers.
There's an art (or, more accurately, a science) to constructing a chimney system that performs well (by efficiently drafting and venting the byproducts of combustion) and looks great. Draft, when we're talking about chimneys, refers to the flow of the hot air and gases (from the fire in your appliance) up and out of your home. Proper draft is key to your chimney working as it should. If you're experiencing performance problems, such as smoking or backdrafting, there's a good chance it has to do with your system's draft and flow.
Repairs are (unfortunately) an unavoidable part of being a homeowner — no matter how well-built or well-maintained the systems in your home are, eventually, at least some small repairs are going to be necessary. Chimney technicians at Coopertown Services have been repairing chimney systems in Shelby County since 1978. We've inspected, assessed, and fixed just about every problem you can come across. And we aim to provide the kind of service that makes the potentially frustrating process of needing chimney repairs as easy as possible.
Every chimney should be equipped with a damper, which is designed to close off the flue opening when a fire isn't burning in the fireplace. Without a properly functioning damper to close off the flue, you'll end up wasting money and energy to heat and cool the air inside of your home. A damaged damper can also allow water into your chimney system, and can trap dangerous gases and smoke inside of your home. Dampers fail for a variety of reasons. Throat dampers, in particular, are known to get stuck in place because of debris or creosote; to get jostled off the track they're seated on; or to corrode or rust into place as a result of a leak or unprotected system.
At Coopertown Services, the safety of our customers is our number one concern. That's why a chimney inspection is one of the most important services we offer. When your chimney system is functioning properly, it's protecting you and your home from the dangerous byproducts of combustion: poisonous gases, high heat, and flammable debris. If your system isn't functioning properly, these dangerous byproducts could damage your home or harm the people in it. The only way to truly know the state of your system is to have a proper, professional chimney inspection that follows the procedures set forth in the National Fire Protection Association's 211 code.
So what do you do when you buy a 28 year old house that has a wall and hearth of red brick.and a pellet stove which you will never use? You call Coopertown Chimney and Wildlife Services and let their team of experienced people help guide you to new possibilities. There was no gas line and we decided that would be just more trouble than we could deal with, so they found this beautiful electric fireplace with the mantle and we are so pleased with the result. Our grandson is already talking Santa and Christmas! Many thanks to Ken and Kenny Robinson, Nolan and all their crews for making this happen. Perfect! I wish I could have added a photo to add to this review.
