Heat pumps are the most economical option for heating in the unique central Florida climate. Heat pumps work the same as a conventional air conditioner while operating in the cooling mode, however; when switched to the heating mode, heat pumps deliver heat by reversing the flow of refrigerant. Reversing the flow causes hot compressed refrigerant to flow to the evaporator coil in the air handler. The blower fan then forces air across the hot coil to provide heat. As opposed to conventional straight cool air conditioners, which utilize electric resistance heat strips, heat pumps consume much less electricity in the heat mode contributing to lower electric utility bills.
According to Progress Energy, TECO and Department of Energy, the average Florida home uses about 54% of consumed energy for heating and cooling, easily the largest single energy-consuming appliance in the home. Installing a high efficiency can lower electric bills by 25% to 40%. Bay Area Heating and Cooling offers a host of energy efficient air conditioners by Trane and other manufacturers. Some advanced models offer SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) of 21.00. The minimum efficiency standard in Florida is 14.00 SEER.
Air handlers are one component of a split system. Usually air handlers are installed in the attic, the garage, or an interior closet. They are connected to the outdoor condenser via copper refrigerant lines. These lines carry compressed refrigerant to the evaporator coil within the air handler, which allows the refrigerant to expand, cooling the coil. The blower fan then pushes air across the coil to provide cool air. A duct system, connected to the air handler, disperses the cool air throughout the home.
