Established in 1906 and in its fourth generation of ownership, Collins Electric Co., Inc. is a trusted electrical contracting and design firm serving commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities across western Massachusetts. At the core of daily operations is hands-on management by members of the Collins family. Our expertise in electrical construction covers all types of buildings ranging from commercial, industrial and municipal, to schools, colleges and universities, health care, correctional and religious facilities.
Collins Electric has been on the cutting edge of lighting retrofits for many years, helping people "join the green revolution" before sustainability was customary. We were the contractor for the world's first commercial fluorescent lighting installation at The Springfield Armory, which sought high lighting levels without a high demand for electricity. During World War II, there was a concern that the power companies could not keep up with the increased electrical demand caused by factories ramping up for the war effort.
Collins Electric Company was founded in 1906 by John J. Collins, who held a degree in electrical engineering from St. Francis College. The firm's earliest work was converting homes in Springfield from gas light to electricity. During this time, materials were delivered to each jobsite by horse drawn wagon and apprentices of the company were tasked with shoveling out horse stalls! In 1911, John persuaded older brother, Timothy, to join the firm and in 1919, William P. Collins joined and became the general manager.
