Grant Sr., or "J Grant" as he was called, began adulthood as an army private in a combat engineer group serving in France in World War I. After the war, he was certified to teach and did so in a rural one-room schoolhouse. In the mid 1930's, he began to farm cotton and build homes locally. In 1948, his only son, Grant Jr., became part of his construction business, and father and son were full-time builders. At that time, as brick masons and carpenters, they built the complete project. J. Grant worked in the business until his retirement in the 1960's.
