Third-generation rug expert Mansour Yaghoubian is one of this country's foremost authorities on fine Oriental and Persian rugs. He was educated as an engineer at CSU Sacramento, but soon after graduation he realized his original passion for heirloom-quality rugs would be his life's work. Oriental and Persian rugs made of wool and silk rank among the most beautiful and durable home furnishings in the world. Here are some tips for maintaining the beauty of your rug for decades. Like other floor coverings, Oriental and Persian rugs should be vacuumed regularly to remove dirt, lift fibers and restore freshness. Use your brush attachment and move it gently in a back-and-forth motion across the rug. Do not use a vacuum cleaner with a rotating brush on rug fringe. A soft broom will whisk away debris and straighten the fringe, without risk of snarling, twisting or breaking the fibers.

It is truly amazing how a professional cleaning can bring back your Oriental rug's rich color, natural softness and shine. But that's not all a proper cleaning will accomplish. Loosening and removing dust and dirt from wool, silk or cotton fibers also increases longevity. If you look at particles of soil, dust and dirt under a microscope, you can see sharp edges that can rip, tear and abrade, weakening both the knots and foundation. Professional cleaning prevents this type of damage. If your rug is in a high-traffic area, in an entryway or family room, for example, consider a professional cleaning every one to three years.

Mansour's offers only high-quality hand-knotted rugs made of superior wools and silks. Each Oriental rug is created on a specially constructed loom outfitted with warp (horizontal) and weft (vertical) strands, typically of cotton, but occasionally of silk or wool. Hand-woven rugs take time — the weaver sits at the bottom of the loom and works from the bottom up, tying specialized knots onto the foundation strands and producing the rug's pile and design. The best Persian rugs can have from 150 to 450 knots per square inch.
