Having your home evaluated with an Infrared camera sheds valuable light on the effectiveness of your home's thermal envelope. An infrared scanner reveals hidden air leaks and areas where insulation isn't performing, and can also yield some interesting surprises - such as where an un-insulated hot water pipe or recessed lights may be contributing to an ice dam, for an example.

Lewis Insulation has the capability of removing existing insulation from the attic, if the need should arise. We use state-of-the-art equipment to vacuum remove water or fire damaged insulation, or contaminated insulation from animals or rodents that have made their way into the attic. In these cases, whether it be squirrels, raccoon, bats or mice, droppings and urine deposits often create strong odors and can be hazardous to your health. Any of these scenarios can cause serious damage to your current insulation drastically reducing the efficiency of the insulation.

There are several common types of insulation - fiberglass (in both batt and blown forms), cellulose, rigid foam board, and closed cell spray foam. When correctly installed with air sealing, each type of insulation can deliver comfort and lower energy bills during the hottest and coldest times of the year.

While no one can guarantee that you will not have ice dam build up due to Minnesota's unpredictable winter weather, there are steps that can be taken to control the amount and severity of ice dams you may have. Ice dams are generally more prevalent on older homes. They are commonly seen as ice build up on roof eves and icicles. Ice dams can cause both interior and exterior damage to your home, including the growth of mold and mildew in attics and on walls. At Lewis Insulation, we can help you assess the causes of your ice dams and help provide you with a solution.

Heating and cooling your home accounts for 50 - 70% of your home energy use. Unless your home was constructed with special attention to energy efficiency, adding insulation will probably reduce your utility bills. Much of the existing housing stock in the U.S. is not insulated to the optimal level. Older homes are likely to use more energy than newer homes, usually due to inadequate insulation and air leakage. Insulation saves money. It also makes your home more comfortable by helping to maintain a uniform temperature through the house.

At Lewis Insulation, our technicians are trained in insulating walls whether it be the exterior or interior. Most commonly done in older homes is the insulating of exterior walls. This usually means blowing cellulose insulationinto the stud wall cavity through a hole drilled into the exterior of your home. Insulating exterior walls can be done on the interior of the home as well if need be, but the installation of cellulose insulation is extremely dusty & dirty. This would make for considerable clean up with walls, floors, ceilings and furniture just to name a few.

A properly vented attic is very important. Inadequate venting in your attic causes all sorts of problems, from wood rot to mildew, peeling exterior paint, rusty nails/screws, roofing problems and even energy loss. The good news is that it can be easily prevented by simply venting your attic correctly. For attic ventilation to be effective, outside air should enter the attic low at the attic perimeter, and exit high near the attic peak or roof vents. Most attics require air chutes to circulate proper air flow.
