In 1850, August Trilling, a first generation German immigrant opened a General Store on 8th and Pennsylvania Ave. At that time all stores were general stores supplying customers with hardware, turpentine and even whiskey. In the late 1890's, August moved the store to Michigan Avenue and in 1911 Trilling Hardware moved to it's now present location of 9th and Michigan Avenue. Over the years this location has seen many changes from removing the display windows on the northeast corner, to adding the garden center in late 1995.
