Ross Chapin Architects has been designing wonderfully scaled and richly detailed buildings and gardens for more than a generation. We take joy in creating places for people that are both functional and beautiful. Our work shows that neighborhoods, buildings and outdoor spaces can be alive and vibrant, authentic and soulful. We strive to create places that nourish the individual, support healthy family relationships, and foster a strong sense of community. For many years, one cornerstone of our work has been custom residential design.
We're pleased to offer this collection of selected plans. Most of these homes have been built and fine-tuned with the help of craftsman builders - or as I sometimes say, they've had the benefit of a "full-scale mockup". A small cottage can be an ideal backyard writing studio, guesthouse or honored dwelling for an aging parent. Our larger houses (small by many standards) may fit the needs for a young family or retired couple, and may be complemented by one of our garages, live-aboves or tool sheds.
For many years, one cornerstone of our work has been custom residential design. We worked closely with clients to create homes tailored to their needs and fit with their surroundings. We strived to make every cubic foot count and every space memorable. We are now focusing almost exclusively on community-oriented projects, taking our knowledge and passion for thoughtfully designed homes and applying it to small-scale infill pocket neighborhoods as well as larger mixed-use, walkable neighborhoods.
The folks at The War on Cars posted a podcast episode about Eli Spevak’s Cully Green community in Portland, Oregon. It’s about car-less community and its illegal in most jurisdictions in the country. Time to change that! … This said, I’d rather re-frame it from “war” to “more choices”. —rc
We’re excited to help create an innovative pocket neighborhood in Sitka, Alaska. When our clients purchased the property last week, they made front page news, which then was followed by local support. Nice!
Granny flats for aging parents … Not a new idea, but they are gaining a place in America. Glad to see Kol Peterson featured. His ‘Backdoor Revolution’ book and accesorydwellin gs.org website are the go-to sources to get these built.
