Guernsey teamed with Toronto based engineering consultants to design the new Toronto Raptors Practice Facility in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The 69,000-square-foot facility is one of the premier practice facilities in. The 39-acre site was designed to accommodate nine rental car agencies in a true "common" facility. Multiple operational planning studies were developed to ensure the greatest level of operational efficiency. We realize we're a little different. It's not often you'll see engineers and architects chatting over the water cooler - but then, it's not often you'll see an employee-owned firm that truly embodies what it means to be owned by employees, either.
Structural integrity is based on many factors that evaluate stability, strength and rigidity. Our structural engineering team provides many services including design development, specifications, building calculations, peer review, reports and evaluations for existing structures, and construction oversight. We coordinate with all disciplines to make sure the elements of the building have the correct force resistance. Buildings that can withstand all loads that will act upon it (vertical, horizontal, gravitational, building weight and the weight of its occupants) are the result of smart structural engineering.
In our business, an aesthetically-pleasing exterior certainly matters. However, of deeper importance is user-driven designs, functional floor plans, thoughtful building systems, sustainable practices, and cost-effective solutions that don't look cost-effective. You really can have it all. Guernsey's architectural services have extended to both private and public sector clients for more than 50 years. Building our diverse portfolio has afforded us the opportunity to learn from many people in a variety of industries.
Our landscape architectural services focus on resilient and sustainable planning and design. We get pretty creative, merging planning and design with the elements of nature, while considering climate and beneficial use to enhance our surroundings. Our philosophy considers the low impact designs that account for extreme weather and also protects our natural resources. We've won numerous local and regional awards for our work on streetscapes, parks and open spaces, trails and athletic facilities, private site developments, placemaking projects, and green infrastructure.
This is truly the foundation of Guernsey. Our civil engineering roots reflect on our very first days in 1928. Though technology and processes are very different today than they were then, one thing that hasn't changed is the value of a team who knows the intricacies of successful projects at every level: local, state and federal. Population growth, increased urbanization and new business opportunities are things every city wants - but with those benefits come the need for improved infrastructure.
And we're willing to go a long way to make sure every project keeps sustainability front and center. An effective sustainability plan not only meets the needs of the current generation, it does so without jeopardizing those of future generations. This is achievable by working to find a balance of economic, environmental, and social prosperity. In vertical and horizontal built environments, we are committed to design that is driven by a wide range of sustainable strategies and measures, including: energy and water efficiency, renewable energy, waste reduction, low-impact development, human health and well-being, and mindfulness of finite resources.
Our office windows, which look out over the busy highways running through northwest Oklahoma City, are more than a hundred miles from the quiet rural streets of Cherokee, Oklahoma. Even so, the heart and character that define our company's culture resonate as clearly and passionately here and now as they did the day Curtis Harold Guernsey Sr. flicked on a light in his garage in Cherokee and began a civil engineering service to support rural Oklahoma municipalities. That was 1928. Today, we consider it our duty - and, equally, our honor - to carry on not only the name of our founder, but also the values that defined him as a trusted, loyal man of integrity.
Engineering covers a lot of territory around here. Our highly experienced in-house team of engineers consistently communicates with the architectural and consulting disciplines to ensure all considerations are incorporated into designs from day one. If your business manufactures products, refines petroleum or produces chemicals, you will benefit from our chemical/process engineers. We are highly skilled professionals that focus on applying chemical engineering and environmental. Maybe it used to be about simply changing a light bulb, but in today's technology-driven, energy-consuming world, electrical engineers are more critical than ever.
Design - with a purpose. We don't just design attractive buildings. Our designs are expressions of function, form, and aesthetics. The architects, designers and planners in our architecture division are diverse, creative, resourceful, and known for their exceptional results. In our business, an aesthetically-pleasing exterior certainly matters. However, of deeper importance is user-driven designs, functional floor plans, thoughtful building systems, sustainable practices, and cost-effective solutions that don't look cost-effective.
Maybe it used to be about simply changing a light bulb, but in today's technology-driven, energy-consuming world, electrical engineers are more critical than ever. Our decades-long perspective on the evolution of technology has shaped our electrical engineering design into a prudent balance of both conventional and leading-edge technology. Consumers today expect design to be not only cost-effective and energy-efficient, but also aesthetically pleasing. We deliver in each of those areas. Thomas Edison definitely got the ball rolling, but today we have lighting systems that are cost-effective, attractive, energy-efficient, and even sensitive to human physiological sight needs.
