Cornerstone Design Inc was founded in 1989 to provide a full range of architectural services to commercial clients. Projects have included both new construction and renovations, and the firm's experience has broadened to include single and multi-family residential and non-profit work. Founder, Richard L. Henes AIA Emeritus, started Cornerstone in response to a perceived need for a "construction-smart" architect. Rich retired at the end of 2016. The firm is now led by David Esau AIA, who became a principal in 1995.
For this house in Ann Arbor, Cornerstone Design developed a design for a master suite addition which was sensitive to the original, early-modernist design of the house. The addition is at the right side of the picture. This client had a large unfinished basement, and a strong desire for an "endless" type pool for swimming. The project also included a kitchen, bathroom, office space, and spare bedroom.
