Our firm is distinguished for its expertise in coastal home design, interior design and for combining the highly personalized attention of a small office with the technical expertise and high-level design of a large metropolitan firm.
Principal Architect Michael McKinley, AIA is the lead designer on every project and meets with clients throughout the design and construction. He established Michael McKinley and Associates in 1989 after working at several internationally known architecture firms in Boston and New York. Michael received a Bachelor of Architecture and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design. He is the Chairman of the Stonington Architectural Review Board and is a member of the American Institute of Architects.
OUR OFFICE is located on a narrow peninsula in a historic seaside village. For more than 30 years our architecture firm has designed new custom homes and renovations in challenging coastal environments such as Stonington Borough, CT. WE APPROACH every project without preconceptions. Our architecture and interior design are responsive to our client's expectations and no two clients are alike. A key design philosophy of ours is to "work from the inside out and from the outside in." Thus indoor rooms become outdoor rooms that merge with the landscape and seascape.
Up on the roof! Here is a birds-eye view of a classic slate "Inspire by Boral" roof on Architect Michael McKinley's house. He selected the colors for this custom blend.
Tweaking the hanging height of one of our favorite pendants: Louis Poulsen's PH5 in shades of blue. Perfect for a Weekapaug Summer house!
We are honored to be selected "2021 Best of Houzz Design" winner for the 2nd consecutive year! The award recognizes the most popular architecture on this leading home design website.
Aging gracefully! Our firm designed this Watch Hill Shingle Style home a decade ago. The first photo was taken this summer and the second was shot shortly after the residence was built. Timeless!
This clerestory takes advantage of the low angle of the winter sun for daylighting while the Louis Paulsen PH5 pendant provides soft illumination in the evening. On this winter solstice we look forward to the longer brighter days ahead! #mckinleyarchite ct #daylighting #louispoulsen
