At Chesapeake Architects, we believe the architect's primary job is to help the Owner create value - value as the Owner defines that word. To that end, we try to be the Owner's diligent guide throughout the planning process. It is our job to help Owners realize what, for them, is the proper balance of functionality, durability, initial cost, aesthetics, and resale value. We believe, the right outcome to seek is the Owner's deepest satisfaction, five years down the road. Although the decisions always belong to the Owners, we will risk advocating what we think is in your long-term interest.
The CAD programs most people use can only generate a 3D view after the key decisions are final. The 3D program we use comes from Europe, and it is tailored for custom designers like us. Almost everything we draw is 3D, and therefore in a form we can all fully comprehend. These advantages produce a superior design documents and fewer construction errors. Both outcomes are to the benefit of the Owner in terms of their happiness, time and money. In short, 3D design enables the Architect, Craftsmen and Owners to much better "co-operate" as a well informed Team.
Is Chesapeake Architects a large firm? No, we are three experienced AIA Architects, one Intern, and an Office Manager. Our firm is set up so we can work closely with Owners to meet their individual needs. Where do you do most of your work? We are based in Chestertown, on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Most of our work is local (on the Upper Eastern Shore). Our strengths lie in our extensive experience planning structures to suit this particular environment (its water-oriented structures, Critical Areas zoning, flood risks, hot humid summers, and historic contexts).
Built-in cabinetry and custom furniture can dramatically enrich our experience. Both add layers of richness to almost any interior. No doubt they also add cost, both in terms of the design effort and the cabinetry budget. On the the other hand, each can address our functional needs in a way that adds beauty. Where, for example, are we going to store the stuff we don't often use, such that it doesn't become unsightly clutter. Built-ins designed to meet such needs elegantly, add joy to our daily lives as well as adding value at the point of resale.
Over the past 25 years, we have built close working relationships with many excellent craftsmen, builders, mechanics, and artisans. The people we list below all seek to be known for the care they take to understand an Owner's objectives, and for the skills they bring to the job of carrying them out. They are craftsmen we have learned to trust, and we value them highly as teammates. Of course, they work with other people as well, just as we are always open to working with other craftsmen. On the other hand, we have extensive experience working together as a team.
