Open Doors Kalamazoo is all about community and right now our community, along with so many other communities around the nation, is in pain. We witnessed two public health crises - a global pandemic and the national police brutality crisis. In both crises, Black and brown people have endured the worst of these attacks. The continual and unwarranted deaths of Black men and women by law enforcement is unacceptable and our communities are demanding change. We stand in solidarity with African-American people around the nation and especially here in Kalamazoo.
Open Doors Kalamazoo is building a community of people who are overcoming homelessness through relationships, housing, employment, education, and sobriety in response to God's love for all. We are privately funded by people who want to make a difference. An ecumenical group of Christians established the Open Door coffee house in 1970 as a drop-in center to build relationships of support and caring with urban young people. When our founders discovered there were many young people with nowhere to live, they turned their focus to providing overnight shelter.
They take personal interest in helping people in the community. Also Open Doors Kalamazoo, take pride in all of the properties. They're well maintained.
I currently live in open doors and it has been the great experience and has changed my life for the better. It's a great program and has taught me a lot.
