One of the more specific and delightful challenges that Jonathan enjoys in his work is the design and crafting of fine woodworking desks. Besides all the graceful basic proportions of his beloved table forms, the designer gets to play with the elements of storage an often, moving parts. A delicious little challenge for a designer craftsman like Jonathan. Designed for people who like to write or draw on a canted surface. The right side (or left if you prefer), can also be raised to level for a complete flat surface.
Jonathan opened his first fine woodworking studio in Seattle in the late 70′s. His goal was to put together his design background, his still developing skills as a craftsman and artist and create the most sensuous furniture. This would remain his goal ever since. The studio has high ceilings, wood-stove heat and classical music; saws, planers and shapers; and traditional cabinetmakers benches. Recently the shop has expanded in capacity and I now offer two kinds of work: the one of a kind pieces for which I am known, and now, limited runs (two or three pieces!) of designs which have been in greatest demand.
The Leviathan chair is extraordinarily comfortable due to a generously curved back rail and strong lumbar support, all shaped by hand with a spokeshave. The design for this and other dining chairs is purposely kept quiet as dining chairs are almost always part of a larger composition, and should not overwhelm. The name has an interesting origin. An attempt to provide an ethereal, peaceful place to rest; springy, airy mattress support provided by cambered wooden slats.
