The first thing you need to know about glass tile, is that it is beautiful, and an excellent tool to add design and light to a space. There are three different basic types of glass tile: Cast glass, Fused glass, and Coated glass. Cast Glass is formed in a liquid state at least 1600 degrees farenheit or higher. Cast glass tends to have a slight wave or texture to its surface, and has the color and design throughout the depth of the tile. Fused Glass is generally produced by using heat to alter sheet glass.
Porcelain tile has always been a great option for durable application for floors, walls, showers, fireplaces, water features, and even outdoors. What mostly sets porcelain tile apart is its ability to mimic other products like natural stone and hardwood, while providing durability and very low maintenance. To form the mixture that becomes porcelain tile, water is mixed with raw materials like feldspar, clay, silicon sand, porcelain, and others. This mixture then goes through a spray dryer to create a perfect consistency by removing excess moisture.
Hand made tiles can range from a simple subway shape, to artistically hand painted designs. There are numerous companies that create stunning handmade designs which can be placed in homes and commercial spaces alike. Most handmade tiles are made with a ceramic clay body. Once the body of the tile is formed in the correct shape, the tile goes through an initial firing process. After that, the tiles can be carved or painted to the company or the client's desire. Hand made tiles are not right for every job as they are more delicate than porcelain options.
