Care to guess the potential service life of brick or concrete masonry? If you guessed a century or more, you're right. Even better, masonry is naturally fire and pest resistant.
Bricks can be arranged in six different orientations, known as stretcher, shiner, soldier, sailor, header, and rowlock. Depending on the orientation, you might need different kinds of bricks. For example, a hollow brick wouldn’t work in a shiner position since it would expose the holes.
When possible, during alignment, tap the brick or stone into place rather than simply using hand pressure, as it will increase the bond strength by more than half and as much as double than through hand pressure alone.
Modern construction techniques have changed the nature of masonry drastically. A great example is with concrete masonry units. Even if the client wants that brick look, many buildings (especially commercial ones) are built with concrete bricks, then given an outside layer of traditional brick.
Even if the only thing most people see is the outer layer, you know that a lot of structural work goes into those retaining walls and terraces. So does a masonry supplier, which is why they’ll have both the structural materials and the decorative ones.
