S.L. Williamson Co., Inc. is a third-generation asphalt paving and road construction company. We take great pride in our work and have many second and third-generation employees that share the same ethic and attention to detail. The nature and scope of our work varies from pothole patching to heavy highway work. We produce plant mix asphalt (sometimes called "Blacktop" or "Bituminous Concrete") in three asphalt plants located in Central Virginia near Charlottesville. Each plant is located in a rock quarry as the main ingredient, approximately 94% - 95% by weight, is crushed aggregate.
Regardless of the surface material chosen for a project, base preparation and drainage issues are often the most important part of a residential driveway project. The primary structural integrity of the driveway comes from the base stone; the surface (although structural) is only as good as the base. For the longevity of the driveway and for the integrity of adjacent structures, it is important to design a driveway with good drainage. Customers sometimes forget that water runs downhill and will request driveways that may express their aesthetic desires but will not adequately direct rain water away from their house or garage or favorite flower bed.
There are more than 2 million miles of paved roads in the United States, and an astounding 94 percent are surfaced with asphalt. Is this way of building roads a sustainable one? The answer is a resounding YES. The asphalt industry is already America's number one recycler. In fact, asphalt pavement is 100 percent recyclable and reusable and it is America's most reused pavement material. Thanks to new technologies known as "warm-mix" asphalt, a mix that can be produced at one of our three plants in Central Virginia and placed on roads at reduced temperatures.
