The other popular style of shingles is many times referred to as "Luxury" or "Architectural" shingles which are very thick offset patterned shingles. They all have a special starter, and require extra labor to install etc.

Think of this as rolling down the windows in your car. You bring in cooler outside air in the attic through "low" or "intake" vents usually located around the eaves or in the soffit overhang and exhaust the hotter air out the peaks of the roof usually located on the gable ends, with dormer vents, or ridge vent. In the winter you need ventilation to keep the attic dry by circulating air through the attic. This prevents the natural moisture in the air from rotting out the structure. The optimal time to add additional ventilation on the roof is during the re-roof.
