Solar swimming pool heating is done by diverting the pool's water through a black plastic heat exchanger exposed to the sun. Sounds easy but distributing the flow from your pool all over the roof of your home can be challenging given the fact the temperature can swing 150 degrees Farenheit from a cold winter day to baking in the sun mid-summer with the pool up to temperature. Plastics will expand and contract 3 over 30 feet with temperature change. Finding space for it can be difficult. Securing solar to the roof properly is an applied science unto itself.
Mike at Eco Solar built this deluxe flat roof ballasted Hot Sun solar pool heating system in Venice Beach recently. Note the use of flexible expansion joints on the long pipe run. Not only does this allow for movement of the pipe as it changes length with temperature, it also provides a convenient...
A classic from 2010. 3000 Sq ft of Powerstrip ballasted to a flat roof of a municipal pool in Richmond BC. The only problem was the pool temp is kept at 29C with a boiler within a tight band. We see this problem on indoor municipal pools as well as other "commercial" pools. Note. solar for...
Making stuff in Shanghai not because its cheaper. Its not anymore. We just don't have the infrastructure in North America since.....about 25 years ago.
Ed Begley Jr is the newest owner of a Hot Sun PVT system. His roof was filled with PV (solar electric) before he and his wife (actress Rachelle Carson) realized they needed to heat their pool even mid summer due to shading. Ted Bavin (right in the picture-to Ed's left) owner of All Valley Solar,...
