A mantel surround has two columns with a top section called an entablature that frames the fireplace. Wooden fireplace surrounds have traditionally been the most popular for mantel designs. When updating an existing fireplace with an insert and tiling the face that work is typically done before the surround is measured and installed. I go over the process with you during the site visit. The surrounds are primed and installed then the final paint or stain is done in place. An overmantel is a fireplace mantel with a decorative section above, typically of a similar mantel design.

Crown molding sits on an angle with compound miter joints that are important to get correct so over time there is no seperation with seasonal changes. Typically the install is a primed crown, most painters prefer to do the final finishing in place after the nails are filled and the edges caulked.
