Underground Surveying is a Connecticut-based company that provides private utility locating, concrete imaging, leak detection, & video inspection services to construction professionals, environmental consultants, and property owners in CT, NY, NJ, MA, and RI. Underground Surveying was founded in 2005 by Peter Viola, an apprentice to Dr. James S. Mellett, CPG of Subsurface Consulting, in response to the growing need for private utility locating services in Connecticut and New York. Our primary goal of doing business is to help our clients reduce risk, gain peace of mind, and keep their projects running on schedule by providing them with fast, thorough, and accurate subsurface imaging services.

Our leak detection services can help you find and pinpoint the location of hidden leaks in underground water lines on both commercial and residential properties. By using a customized seven-step leak detection process and a combination of acoustic ground microphone, acoustic correlating logger, and Helium gas detection technology, we are capable of finding leaks in the following types of water lines and pipe materials. A noticeable drop in water pressure or flow volume. Or, unexplained sudden increase in water use, consistently high water use, or water use that has been climbing at a fairly steady rate for several billing cycles.

Although none of our services currently require a state certification, such as the plumbing, HVAC, or electrical trades do, we use an apprenticeship model similar to these trades. We provide our new hires with on-the-job training in conjunction with a little bit of independent reading and studying. All newly hired geophysical survey technicians must work alongside an experienced team leader for at least 1 year, before being given permission to work independently on their own projects. However, because most of the knowledge required for mastering our trades can only be learned through experience, it can often take up to 2-3 years before our apprentices are competent enough to lead their own teams.

Our video inspection services can help you determine the internal conditions and structural integrity of pipes and conduits with a diameter of 1.5 inches or greater. By using a customized seven-step video inspection process along with a combination of three different sized push rods and two different sized robotic crawlers--each with a high-definition colored video camera attached to its head--we are capable of inspecting the following types of pipes and conduits as well obtaining the following information.
