The International Association of Bridge, Structural & Ornamental Iron Workers was founded in 1896. The mission and purpose of the association is to provide skilled labor required for erecting structural steel, heavy rigging, place reinforcing steel, erect ornamental ironwork, and welding. The trade of Ironwork involves working both at great heights and underground. It includes the fabrication, production, erection and construction of all iron, steel ornamental metals, bronze, etc., and the application of all sealants.
The International Union, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, was founded in 1881. The mission and purpose of the Carpenters union is to provide employment services to its members and negotiate agreements with employers of its members. Carpenters participate in a four year Apprenticeship program that covers approximately 1300 hours of on the job training and 144 hours of related classroom instruction each year. The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America has put forth an all-out effort not only to train people for entry into the field of carpentry, but to offer training for those who are already journeymen carpenters by upgrading their present abilities and expanding their knowledge and skills so that they may be familiar with and prepared for all innovations.
Construction Electricians layout, assemble, install and test electrical fixtures, apparatus, and wiring used in electrical systems on construction projects. These systems are used to provide power for heat, light and air conditioning and refrigeration. Construction Electricians also install and connect electrical machinery, electronic equipment controls, signals and communications systems. Construction Electricians follow blue prints and specifications for most installations. For safety, Electricians follow National Electrical Code Specifications and procedures and, in addition, must comply with requirements of state, county and municipal electrical codes.
The International Union of Painters and Allied trades was chartered in the 1800's to promote professionalism within the industry. Members of the Painters Union are engaged in painting, paperhanging, drywall taping and finishing, high-pressure water blasting, and other allied crafts. The protection and beautification of the exterior and interiors of buildings and structures of all types and many other surfaces important to our everyday living is the principal activity of those working in the painting industry.
