Master Builders of Iowa is the recognized leader of the construction industry in the state of Iowa. Founded in 1912, MBI is one of 89 chapters of the Associated General Contractors of America, the most influential and widely respected construction association in the country. MBI's members perform the majority of the state's commercial, industrial, and public works building projects. The association provides its members with a comprehensive array of educational, safety, environmental, labor, legal, professional development, and legislative services.

The Master Builders of Iowa Annual Report highlights the year's accomplishments and provides you with a thorough review of MBI's programs, as well as our focus on being the essential resource for improving member performance.

Master Builders of Iowa is excited to offer an education and training consulting service to assist member-firms with developing their workforce on a schedule and budget that works best for them at no charge. MBI's Strategic Training and Retention Tool, or MBI START is a new approach to employee development that takes into consideration planning, scheduling, delivering and tracking of the training that your employees need to grow within your company. Combining MBI's expertise in industry education with the contractor's knowledge of their workfoce, MBI START creates a customized plan that will benefit your company and each employee enrolled in the training plans.

As a value-added membership service, Master Builders of Iowa offers the MBI Training Vault, which can only be accessed by MBI members. The Training Vault is an electronic tool that is designed to make the process of tracking and documenting training records easy, organized, accurate, and accessible. Your company-specific Training Vault contains all training conducted by MBI dating back to 1998, and has the capability to include any training that your company would like to have included. This online credential tracking system gives company management, as well as employees, easy access to training records.

The MBI-PAC is a tool that helps in every facet of our public affairs efforts. The MBI-PAC exists solely to provide financial support to candidates who reflect the ideas and values of Master Builders of Iowa. The MBI-PAC helps to foster relationships in working with candidates who will support our efforts. When the MBI-PAC contributes to a candidate, a mutual respect is developed which allows for a good working relationship in the policy-making process. The same holds true for all levels of government - federal, state, county, and local.

As commercial construction companies and their employees spend more and more time on demanding projects, it is critical for the industry to find ways to deliver training with as little impact on production as possible. Since 2013, Master Builders of Iowa has been offering Training on Demand as a solution to this situation. In addition to the training programs we offer on an annual basis, MBI offers training programs based on the requests of one, or several, firms. Training on Demand courses can be planned to fit the schedule of your company and offered either as a private in-house program, or a public course opened to others from the industry.

A key component of facilitating MBI's mission to be the essential resource for improving member performance and promoting a business environment favorable to the construction industry, is our education and training opportunities. MBI members have long understood the value of making sure that they and their employees are continually engaged in learning in order to remain high performing organizations. In an effort to recognize individuals in the industry who believe in the importance of life-long learning and have demonstrated their desire for personal growth through their participation in the wide array of education and training activities offered by MBI, we established the Master Builder Designation Program.

Master Builders of Iowa takes great pride in offering and delivering high level educational programs that are timely and relevant for Iowa's commercial construction industry. We offer multiple leadership development programs, including our MB EYE on the Future program that has been around since 2005, the triennial program The Leadership Summit, and our newly developed program, Building a Safety Champion, which will launch in spring 2021. In addition to our leadership development programs, MBI offers a host of scheduled training opportunities throughout the year, covering a wide variety of topics.

In 2012, the Iowa Occupational Safety Health Administration (Iowa OSHA) and Master Builders of Iowa joined together to create the nation's first public-private partnership focused on providing a joint safety consultation and best practices program exclusively for Iowa's commercial construction industry. The program, called WORKSAFE, is a customized job site safety approach, unique to each project owner and job site team. WORKSAFE is designed to assist contractors to be "safety proactive" through the implementation of pre-construction safety review and planning; professional job site consultation; project recognition; and special package pricing.

Through our constant dedication to be a full service association to Iowa's commercial builders, MBI is a proven leader in project information; education and professional development; government affairs; safety; and workforce development. If you are still asking "Why MBI?" you should know that no other trade organization in our industry shoulders the broad responsibility and commitment to represent the best interests of the commercial construction industry in so many ways. MBI's brand recognition gets its strength from the members who affiliate with this organization.

Iowa's commercial construction industry employs thousands of Iowans, pays millions in taxes to federal, state and local governments, and is a key element to sustainable economic growth for our state. With such credentials, you might wonder why policy-makers would want to burden the construction industry with far reaching employment and environmental regulations and stymie growth opportunities for the industry by dictating decisions traditionally left to a company's management team. Your guess is as good as ours.

Assisting MBI members in building their workforce is a major part of what MBI does. Sometimes that assistance comes in the form of educating and training a current workforce, and sometimes it comes in providing resources to assist companies in bringing new talent on board. Since 2016, MBI has been developing an initiative to recruit new faces into the commercial construction industry, as well as to develop resources that assist MBI members in recruiting those new faces into their companies. On this page, you will find information on the different facets of MBI's workforce initiative program including Build Iowa, Construction Week, and MBI's Job Board.

MBI leaders have long recognized the challenges and costs associated with providing healthcare benefits to employees as the regulatory environment became more complicated and healthcare costs more difficult to control. In response, MBI has taken action to develop a new healthcare option for Iowa's commercial construction industry called MBI Plus. MBI Plus saw steady growth since it's launch last year enrolling nearly 100 lives into the program. While we've learned a lot about the healthcare market, we are excited to announce four new plan offerings with lower deductible rates that we are confident will be attractive for you to quote.

What's new?
