Starting as a laborer after high school and holding just about every position in the industry throughout his career, Alex founded Babbidge Construction Company in 1992 and remains actively involved with projects in addition to his responsibilities as principal of the firm.
General contracting allows the owner to be given a fixed amount for the construction of a project. This approach is best suited to relatively simple and straightforward projects. As the complexity of the project increases, a construction management approach often works better. We work as both a general contractor and a construction manager. There are pros and cons to both approaches, and we would be happy to discuss them with you. Many of our long-term client relationships have started under a competitive bid general contracting model and then migrated to a construction management approach for subsequent projects.
Construction management is our preferred delivery method. As a construction manager, we can become involved with a project from the outset and provide our input and expertise on a myriad of issues, such as pricing, schedule, constructability, site safety, logistics, etc. It also allows us to work on an open-book basis and to really focus on understanding the specific needs of our clients and developing a construction program suited to each job. Historically, 85% of our work has been performed for repeat clients under a construction management format, which speaks to our ability to deliver and satisfy the needs of our clients on their most complex projects.
We typically provide preconstruction services as part of our overall construction management services. However, when appropriate, we are happy to provide preconstruction services as a stand-alone offering. We have provided preconstruction services for owners and architects in both the public and private markets on jobs ranging from $250,000 to almost $30 million.
