The Gas Division is responsible for the distribution of natural gas service to all customers. This involves installing and maintaining gas mains, services, and associated instrumentation in Holyoke and Southampton. The Division also operates and maintains a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) peaking system that allows the Department to vaporize LNG and inject the gas into the distribution system in order to meet peak demands, and services about 9,900 meters in Holyoke and Southampton. The Division also oversees the HG&E's dispatch and 24 hour service operations, which repairs and maintains gas and electric appliances for customers.
A request for service must be submitted for any service to be installed, including: new, changed, or temporary service. Please review HG&E's Information & Requirements for Electric Service Below 600 Volts. The electrician must first submit a Request for Electrical Service form to the Department before starting any work. Please take into account that HG&E requires at least a week for simple services and up to a month or more for complex projects to plan, design, provide materials, and perform the necessary construction.
HG&E will work with you to make the process of setting up or upgrading utility services quick and easy. If you are interested in phone, internet, or data services, please contact HG&E Telecom. If your new location previously received electric or natural gas service from HG&E and already has a meter, sign up online or visit the Main Office during normal business hours. We can set up a new account in your name and will have your electric and/or gas services turned on as quickly as possible. New residential customers will need to supply two valid forms of identification, including a government issued form of photo identification (Driver's License, MA ID Card), and a lease agreement if renting.
The Electric Division is responsible for the generation, transmission, and distribution of all electric services for the Department. This Division also manages meter reading and maintenance functions for all electric and gas meters. Holyoke Gas & Electric serves approximately 18,000 electric customers and experiences a summer peak load of approximately 75 MW. HG&E serves its electric load through a combination of its own generation assets and the purchase of electricity from other providers. HG&E's primary generation assets include the Hadley Falls Hydroelectric Generators, which produce 33MW at the Hadley Falls Dam on the Connecticut River.
