Code requires basements with habitable space to have at least one openable emergency escape and rescue opening. Where basements contain one or more sleeping rooms, emergency egress and rescue openings shall be required in each sleeping room, but shall not be required in adjoining areas of the basement. If you're thinking of remodeling your basement you'll need an egress window and window well. The code requires they be subject to the following: Sill height of not more than 44" above the floor, minimum net clear opening height of 24", and minimum net clear opening width of 20".
The biggest reason design-build might be the best choice for you is it allows us to get to know your needs as a customer and then design a project that meets those needs within your budget. The alternative approach many take is to have an architect design a project without input from the builder only to find out that it is over budget. It's a big disappointment after investing so much time and energy to have to go back to the drawing board because the project is unacceptably over budget. We partner up with different architects and designers that match the architectural style and goals of the client keeping the budget in mind each step of the way.
Clients have a wide range of what "Green Building" and "Sustainability" mean to them personally. For us it means a complete approach to building homes that are energy efficient saving natural resources and your hard earned money, using materials that are less taxing on the environment, and concerns about indoor air quality leading to healthier lives for the owners and their families. There are many approaches that can be taken and as with most they will be driven by budget and payback. Things like geothermal, energy saving appliances, lighting, insulation, air tightness, solar, wind getting off the grid, and a host of other options can be explored within the parameters of the budget and goals of the owner to meet their needs.
