De-thatching, or often called power raking, your lawn is the mechanical removal of excess thatch from your lawn. Unlike aerating, de-thatching is not a routine or annual service that your lawn requires. Most lawns have a consistently normal amount of thatch, between 1/2 and 3/4 inch, and with the help of certain bacteria, additional thatch accumulation will slowly break down over time so the height stays at that normal level. De-thatching is only called for when the thatch layer exceeds the recommended amount and the excess needs to be removed and disposed.

Trees are a precious resource that we all value highly, but like all living things, trees and plants have a natural life expectancy. At Suburban Landscaping tree removal is not a service we like to promote, but sometimes it is a necessary measure in maintaining the health of other trees and plants in the landscape. Just as often trees need to be removed for new construction, dangerous conditions, or just because the tree is dying. We prefer to save your trees if possible, and recommend removal as a measure of last resort.

Annual lawn aeration is the secret to making your lawn healthy, lush and green. You could simply aerate a lawn area and after a few weeks without having applied fertilizers at all, notice a dramatic increase in color, growth pattern and density. Water and air are very important to the soil ecosystem, and to the health of the soils micro-organisms that naturally break down thatch in healthy lawns. Good drainage conditions and ensuring an adequate amount of air in the topsoil are essential so grass roots can breathe and grow.

When most people think of retaining walls, usually only one kind comes to mind; the kind that you see holding back a hillside. While this is one function of a retaining wall, there are many new styles and functions of retaining walls. Walls can be made from many different materials including natural stone, wood, and man made products. They satisfy a variety of outdoor needs and can be both functional and decorative. Available materials come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors and can be installed in many different ways.

The skilled artistic talent of beautifully combining a wide pallet of trees, shrubs, ground covers, and perennials to create a unique, appealing landscape is one that takes time and experience. Knowing the plant is only part of the creative process that our designers work within.
